The Man Behind the Business

The Dark Island Soap Co. was created in honour of my beloved late father, Donald MacLellan.
Dad hailed from Lochboisdale, South Uist, in the beautiful Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with “The Dark Island” being a place we would spend many a happy vacation when dad was visiting his home.
Unfortunately, he passed away on the 31st of August, 2022, from Vascular Dementia.

A business owner himself, he served his apprenticeship with Croall & Croall of Stockbridge, Edinburgh and became a Volkswagen Specialist, going on to own and run his successful motoring business in the sought-after area of Morningside, Edinburgh for over 50 years.

It is a privilege to dedicate this business to my father, and keep his memory alive.

Hydro-distilled hydrosols—also known as floral waters or hydrolats—are aromatic, water-based solutions created when plant materials are boiled directly in water inside a still, rather than being suspended above steam. As the water boils, the rising steam and boiling water mix with the plant's water-soluble compounds and volatile molecules, which are then cooled, condensed, and collected. 

The Hydro-Distillation Process
  • Direct immersion: Unlike pure steam distillation where plants sit on a rack above the water, hydro-distillation submerges the botanical material straight into the boiling water tank. 
  • Cellular extraction: The boiling water forcefully breaks down plant tissues, pulling out both delicate water-soluble plant essences and minor traces of suspended essential oils. 
  • Condensation: The hot vapor passes through a chilled cooling coil, turning back into a liquid that contains the core therapeutic properties of the plant in a gentle, diluted form. 

Hydro-distilled hydrosols—aromatic plant waters produced by distilling botanical matter in water—have a rich history spanning over 4,000 years. Long before modern essential oils were isolated, these fragrant waters were the primary goal of ancient distillation, serving vital roles in medicine, ritual, and beauty across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and the Islamic Golden Age 

Ancient Origins and Early Stills
  • Mesopotamia and Cyprus: Early clay and terracotta stills dating back to circa 1200 BC (and a 4,000-year-old perfume factory on Cyprus) show that primitive hydro-distillation was used to capture aromatic plant waters. 
  • Ancient Egypt: Texts like the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BC) outline floral waters used in spiritual rites and skin care. Legend says Cleopatra used rose water to scent her ship's sails. 
  • Classical Era: Greek and Roman healers like Hippocrates and Galen documented the therapeutic values of distilled herbal waters. 

  • The Islamic Golden Age and Europe
  • The Arab World (8th–11th Century): Scholars refined the alembic still, perfecting the hydro-distillation of rose and wormwood waters for medical remedies. 
  • Medieval Monasteries: European monks maintained apothecaries of lavender, rosemary, and sage waters for digestion and wound care. 
  • The 16th-Century Shift: The invention of the condensing coil finally made isolating pure essential oils efficient. Hydrosols shifted from the primary objective to a secondary byproduct of essential oil production. 

  • Modern Revival 
    • Twentieth Century: American author and aromatherapist Jeanne Rose popularized the modern word "hydrosol" (combining hydro for water and sol for solution). 
    • Today: Valued for being gentle, pH-balanced, and sustainable, hydrosols are widely used in natural skin toners, aromatherapy, and culinary arts.

Hydro-distilled hydrosols—also known as floral waters or hydrolats—are aromatic, water-based solutions created when plant materials are boiled directly in water inside a still, rather than being suspended above steam. As the water boils, the rising steam and boiling water mix with the plant's water-soluble compounds and volatile molecules, which are then cooled, condensed, and collected. We locally source and forage fresh rosehip and yarrow, hand-picking the best ingredients to create this beautifully nourishing hydrolat. Made by the hydro distillation method, this gentle water is rich in antioxidants and effective at calming red, tightening the pores and refreshes the skin's barrier. We use medical grade distilled water and an eco/vegan friendly broad spectrum preservative in all of our facial hydrosols, which preserves the ingredients and is needed for these gentle waters. A rosehip and yarrow hydro-distilled facial mist has a scent that is earthy, herbaceous, and subtly sweet, offering a very different aroma than a traditional, heavily floral rosewater. Because it is hydro-distilled (meaning the steam captures the volatile water-soluble aromatic compounds), the scent is light, fresh, and close to nature. Directions for Use: Hold the bottle 6 to 8 inches from your face, close your eyes, and spritz 3 to 5 times evenly. Chiara MacLellan

Creator & Owner of The Dark Island Soap Co. Holistic Herbalist and Reiki Master

Chiara is an Edinburgh native, born and raised in Craiglockhart, where she had the joy of living close to the beautiful Braid Hills area, which sees an abundance of wild gorse grow each Spring. Perhaps, even in her early years, taking morning walks with her father as a small child, subconsciously, The Dark Island Soap Co. was already calling… Now residing in the beautiful Stirlingshire countryside with her young family, partner and Labrador, “Tag,” she enjoys foraging close to her home with an abundance of nature and woodland close by. As an avid herbalist, Chiara understands and appreciates the wonderfully healing power of nature, and, just like her award-winning botanical and herbal infusions are as the seasons, slowly created, she appreciates that everything blooms in its own time.

The Beacon: Supporting Mental Health in Uist

The Beacon is a community-based mental health support group and registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) located in Lochboisdale, South Uist. It offers a safe, welcoming peer-support space focused on improving island mental health, reducing isolation, and saving lives through social connection and wellness events.

Western Isles Community Care Forum

The Forum was established in 1992 as a forum for Voluntary Care organisations which represent the interests of carers and users of services throughout the Western Isles. It is actively involved in national and local consultations on behalf of the voluntary and independent care sectors and works closely with the statutory care sectors at a statutory planning level. We provide services directly to carers and users by disseminating information, maintaining a register of family carers, producing regular newsletters and providing a Directory of Care Services. Western Isles Community Care Forum SCIO (WICCF) has secured funding for, and administered projects which benefited informal carers, for example, provision of funding for respite, free ice grips and the Carers’ Trainers’ Project, which offers support and training to informal carers. The Forum has a Board of Directors which is made up from the Co-ordinators/Service Managers from some of the Voluntary Care Organisations throughout the islands and one carer representative.

Tagsa Uibhist

"Tagsa Uibhist (which means ‘Uist Support’) was established by a group of friends who wanted to help elderly people who needed support and care, who were socially isolated and who did not have access to transport. Tagsa was formally constituted in 1999 and became a registered charity with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. In 2020, we adopted the simple mission statement Slàinte agus Sunnd, which means Health and Wellbeing. This gives us a broad and inclusive remit, recognizing that achieving wellbeing means different things to different people. Tagsa is a practical organisation and our core services in care at home, elderly support and community transport reflect our commitment to respond to these important needs. Through our Community Gardens project, we provide a wonderful environment for social interaction, learning about vegetable growing, sharing successes and failures in growing different plants and for providing nutritious food locally."
