The Man Behind the Business

The Dark Island Soap Co. was created in honour of my beloved late father, Donald MacLellan.
Dad hailed from Lochboisdale, South Uist, in the beautiful Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with “The Dark Island” being a place we would spend many a happy vacation when dad was visiting his home.
Unfortunately, he passed away on the 31st of August, 2022, from Vascular Dementia.

A business owner himself, he served his apprenticeship with Croall & Croall of Stockbridge, Edinburgh and became a Volkswagen Specialist, going on to own and run his successful motoring business in the sought-after area of Morningside, Edinburgh for over 50 years.

It is a privilege to dedicate this business to my father, and keep his memory alive.

Scented with sweet orange & ginger pure essential oils. Presented in a matte black tin with a mini gold spoon for application. This balm's amazing skin benefits!: - Beeswax benefits the skin by providing deep moisture, creating a protective barrier against environmental stressors, and offering anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is rich in vitamin A and antioxidants, which help with skin repair, cell regeneration, and reducing signs of aging. Beeswax is also non-comedogenic, meaning it allows the skin to breathe while still locking in hydration, making it suitable for most skin types. Moisturising and protective: Locks in moisture: Beeswax is a natural humectant that attracts moisture to the skin and forms a protective, breathable barrier to prevent water loss. Creates a protective shield: It protects the skin from environmental irritants, pollutants, and harsh weather, which is especially helpful in cold or windy conditions. Non-comedogenic: Despite forming a barrier, beeswax does not clog pores, making it safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Soothing and healing: Soothes irritated skin: Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm redness and irritation associated with conditions like eczema. Promotes healing: The antibacterial qualities of beeswax can help prevent infection and support the healing of minor cuts, burns, and bruises. - Shea butter can have many benefits for your skin, including: Moisturising: Shea butter can help soothe dry skin and keep it supple. Anti-inflammatory: Shea butter can help relieve inflammation and calm skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Sun protection: Shea butter can offer some protection against UV rays, but it shouldn't replace sunscreen. Stretch marks: Shea butter can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scarring, and cellulite. Collagen production: Shea butter contains triterpenes, which can help prevent collagen fibre destruction and promote healthy collagen production. Acne: Shea butter can help soothe and moisturise acne. Antioxidant: Shea butter can help combat oxidative stress, which can reduce signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. Skin repair: Shea butter can help speed up the healing process and prevent clogged pores. - Propolis is a nutrient-rich, resinous substance produced by bees that acts as a powerful, multi-purpose skin treatment. It is highly effective at reducing acne and inflammation, accelerating healing for irritated or damaged skin, and providing intense, protective moisture. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that protect against free radical damage and promote a healthy, radiant complexion, making it suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive or acne-prone skin. Rich in nutrients, proteins, and antioxidants, it boosts collagen production to reduce wrinkles, strengthens the skin barrier for improved moisture retention, and provides anti-inflammatory effects to soothe acne and promote wound healing. Key Skin Benefits of Royal Jelly: Anti-Ageing and Collagen Boost: Contains components like 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid that stimulate fibroblast production, essential for collagen synthesis. It helps diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and improves skin elasticity. Deep Hydration: Its lipid content helps seal in moisture, making it excellent for dry, mature, or damaged skin. Acne Treatment and Soothing: Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties soothe redness, irritation, and acne-prone skin, aiding in the reduction of blemishes. Skin Regeneration: Supports skin cell renewal and tissue repair, aiding in healing and reducing dark spots. It is used in both topical cosmetics and as a dietary supplement to promote overall skin vitality. Key benefits include: Antioxidant Protection: Bee pollen is rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols, which help neutralise free radicals that cause oxidative stress and premature skin ageing. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Its anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe skin irritations, redness, and swelling. It is sometimes used topically to help manage inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Wound Healing and Cell Regeneration: Bee pollen may aid in wound healing and tissue regeneration. Animal studies have indicated that a bee pollen extract ointment can be as effective as standard burn treatments with fewer side effects. The amino acids, vitamins, and minerals help protect the skin and support the regeneration of healthy new cells. Hydration and Moisture: The components in bee pollen help maintain skin moisture and improve hydration levels, which is essential for a supple complexion and preventing dryness. Collagen Support: Components like amino acids and vitamins (A, C, and E) may support collagen production and protect existing collagen from degradation, contributing to skin elasticity and firmness. Skin Tone and Texture: Some evidence suggests bee pollen may help with hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin synthesis, and it can also smooth and revitalize skin texture. - Jojoba oil benefits the skin by acting as a powerful moisturiser, thanks to its similarity to the skin's natural sebum, and by providing antioxidant protection. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritation, is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), and supports skin repair and wound healing. Additionally, it can help with anti-aging by promoting collagen production and protecting against free radical damage. Moisturising and anti-aging Deeply hydrates: Jojoba oil is easily absorbed and provides long-lasting moisture without leaving a greasy residue, making it suitable for dry, oily, and acne-prone skin. Chiara MacLellan

Soap Alchemist, Holistic Herbalist and Reiki Master

About the creator and owner of The Dark Island Soap Co. Chiara, an Edinburgh native who now resides in the beautiful Stirlingshire countryside with her young family, has been a full-time self-taught soap maker since the end of 2022, where she also studied for and completed a business diploma in soap making, learning about the importance of creating cold process soap safely. Along with being a traditional soap maker, Chiara now creates incredibly effective skincare also powered by infused herbs and botanicals. An avid herbologist, Chiara understands and appreciates the wonderfully healing power of nature, and captures the beauty of natural ingredients which we reap the benefits from with her award-winning handcrafted range. Chiara also loves foraging locally to her home and uses her kitchen space for all her dehydrating, infusing and soap/skincare making purposes! In the autumn of 2022, after the loss of her father, Chiara studied Reiki therapy and is now a much respected certified Usui Reiki Master, with a Shamanic Energy Healing and Crystal Healing diploma under her belt.

Being a net zero website means that for all the traffic that passes through our website, more trees are planted throughout the globe with Tree Nation, off-setting the carbon emissions made.

Reduce~Reuse~Recycle

At The Dark Island Soap Co. we prioritise reusing and recycling. We use packaging that arrives from stock orders to break down and use as protective padding for your orders, and to also use as secondary "safety boxes" to house your main order boxes in. If we ever receive plastic, you may see it in with your order (as bubble wrap to take an example), as we would rather reuse this harmful material (hoping that you will, too!) than just discard it straight to a landfill.

The Dark Island Soap Co. are proud members of the Plastic Free Communities; Surfers Against Sewage, showing our dedication to being a plastic free and eco-friendly business.
