The Man Behind the Business

The Dark Island Soap Co. was created in honour of my beloved late father, Donald MacLellan.
Dad hailed from Lochboisdale, South Uist, in the beautiful Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with “The Dark Island” being a place we would spend many a happy vacation when dad was visiting his home.
Unfortunately, he passed away on the 31st of August, 2022, from Vascular Dementia.

A business owner himself, he served his apprenticeship with Croall & Croall of Stockbridge, Edinburgh and became a Volkswagen Specialist, going on to own and run his successful motoring business in the sought-after area of Morningside, Edinburgh for over 50 years.

It is a privilege to dedicate this business to my father, and keep his memory alive.

After: Using Blue Moon, with Blue Tansy Oil Facial Night Concentrate and Chamomile, Soothing Facial Night Cream

"Sunrise" is an incredible anhydrous facial mask to start your day with, combining turmeric, Brazilian yellow clay, and orange peel powder makes for a potent, natural treatment primarily designed to brighten, detoxify, and even out skin tone. This combination works synergistically to combat dullness, reduce acne, and deeply cleanse pores, offering a radiant "glow" effect. Comes with a stainless steel spoon. This facial mask's wonderful skin benefits!: - Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, offers skin benefits through its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to brighten complexion, reduce dark spots/hyperpigmentation, fight acne/blemishes, soothe conditions like eczema, and combat signs of ageing by protecting collagen and elastin, promoting radiance, and aiding in wound healing, though more research is needed. It's used in masks to even skin tone, reduce puffiness, and add glow. Key Benefits: Fights Acne: Cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties help control oil and fight acne-causing bacteria. Anti-Ageing: Antioxidants neutralise free radicals, slowing collagen breakdown, fine lines, and wrinkles. Soothes Inflammation: Calms irritated skin, potentially helping with psoriasis, eczema, and redness. Reduces Dark Circles: Stimulates circulation, reducing puffiness and darkness under the eyes. Aids Wound Healing: Its anti-inflammatory effects help control inflammation during the initial stages of healing. - Orange peel powder is a potent natural skincare ingredient packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, and citric acid, offering benefits like brightening skin tone, fading dark spots, fighting acne, and exfoliating dead cells. It acts as a natural astringent to tighten pores and boost collagen production for a youthful, firm appearance. Key Benefits of Orange Peel Powder on Skin: Brightens and Evens Skin Tone: The high Vitamin C content works as a natural bleaching agent to reduce tan, fade pigmentation, and brighten dull skin. Deep Cleansing and Acne Control: Its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties help cleanse pores, reduce inflammation, and combat acne and pimples. Gentle Exfoliation: The texture of the powder removes dead skin cells, blackheads, and impurities, leading to smoother, refreshed skin. Anti-Ageing Effects: Rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, it fights free radicals, boosting collagen synthesis to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Controls Oil Production: As an astringent, it helps manage excess sebum without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. - Brazilian yellow clay has many skin benefits, including: Skin elasticity: Can improve skin elasticity by up to 173%. Detoxification: Can remove pollutants, excess sebum, sweat, and waxes from the skin. Anti-aging: Has antioxidant properties that can help prevent aging skin. Exfoliation: Larger chunks of clay can help exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells and impurities. Skin regeneration: Can help regenerate new skin cells, making the skin appear smoother. Collagen formation: The mineral composition of Brazilian yellow clay can help with collagen formation. Circulation: Can help stimulate circulation, leaving skin feeling refreshed and looking healthy. Dark spots: Can help clear dark spots. Acne: Can help dry out acne. Directions for Use: Using a dry (powdered) clay mask involves mixing it to a creamy consistency, applying it to clean skin, and rinsing it off before it becomes completely dry and itchy. 1. Preparation: Cleanse: Start with a clean face to remove oil and dirt, allowing for better absorption. Using warm water or a warm towel first can help open pores. Mix the Mask: In a clean bowl fill (using the scoop provided) with dry clay and use a small amount of water or liquid (such as tea, honey, rose water, yogurt, or apple cider vinegar-or, for an intensive treatment, we recommend using our Solaris, Facial Day Elixir as the liquid part). Create Consistency: Add liquid slowly, mixing until it reaches a smooth, creamy mud-like consistency. 2. Application: Apply Evenly: Use your fingers or a mask brush to apply a thin, even layer to your face and neck, avoiding the sensitive eye and lip areas. Targeted Application: If you have combination skin, apply a thicker layer to the oily T-zone and a thinner layer elsewhere 3. Timing: Wait: Let the mask sit for 5 to 15 minutes. Don't Let it Fully Dry: According to experts, you should never let a clay mask dry to the point of cracking or flaking. Remove it when it is still slightly damp to avoid over-drying and dehydrating your skin. Sensations: Tightening is normal, but if it causes pain or intense burning, remove it immediately. 4. Removal & Post-Care: Softening: Use warm water and a washcloth to gently soften the mask before wiping it off to avoid pulling the skin. Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Moisturise: Immediately apply a moisturiser or serum, as clay masks can remove natural oils, leaving skin dry. Recommended Frequency: Oily Skin: 1–2 times per week, Dry/Sensitive Skin: Once every 1–2 weeks, Key Tip: Only mix enough for one treatment to avoid waste. 100% Certified Organic Ingredients: * Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, *Kaolin (Brazilian Yellow Clay), *Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Powder *Certified Organic Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Chiara sent us her Chamomile Cold Process Soap. “The packaging was a real treat for the eyes, personalised with a thank you card and dried flowers, encased in beautiful tissue paper. Chiara added an extra special touch with the addition of night time sleep teas, to compliment the soothing scent of the soap. The chamomile and patchouli infusion is wonderfully relaxing and the perfect way to wind down by lathering yourself up in an evening bath or shower. The scent is beautifully delicate, yet potent enough that it leaves a hint of the aroma on your skin after showering. The soap truly felt like a spa treatment for the skin, treating it to a product made with natural ingredients, lovingly made by The Dark Island Soap Co.We would 100% recommend this soap and products made by Chiara. She is passionate about making organic skincare for all.”

Proudly a Net Zero Website

Being a net zero website means that for all the traffic that passes through our website, more trees are planted throughout the globe with Tree Nation, off-setting the carbon emissions made.

Reduce~Reuse~Recycle

At The Dark Island Soap Co. we prioritise reusing and recycling. We use packaging that arrives from stock orders to break down and use as protective padding for your orders, and to also use as secondary "safety boxes" to house your main order boxes in. If we ever receive plastic, you may see it in with your order (as bubble wrap to take an example), as we would rather reuse this harmful material (hoping that you will, too!) than just discard it straight to a landfill.

Plastic Free Communities; Surfers Against Sewage

The Dark Island Soap Co. are proud members of the Plastic Free Communities; Surfers Against Sewage, showing our dedication to being a plastic free and eco-friendly business.
